Abstract

The article discusses the debate on the topic of prostitution that unfolded in the newspaper “Khma Qartveli Qalisa” in the beginning of 20th century but failed to continue and remains a taboo in contemporary Georgia. The article discusses Western European policy approaches to the problem of prostitution and the effects of these so called regulatory and abolitionist policies, along with international human rights law’s reference to the issue. The article represents an attempt to put prostitution on the agenda of public debate in Georgia and uncover its linkages with gender inequality.
